Public anger mounting over disabled girl's school ordeal

08 February 2012

FURTHER calls have been made for a council to fully investigate a teacher who forced a five-year-old brain tumour survivor to wipe up her own urine.

Councillor Gill Farrington says people angry at the treatment of Liberty Rose Finn have contacted her because of her role as chairman of Derbyshire County Council’s improvement and scrutiny for people committee.

The chairman of the committee which deals with child welfare, Councillor Farrington said she had passed the comments in the form of emails and phone calls, to cabinet member for education Mike Longden.

Liberty was eight months old when she was diagnosed with optic chiasm glioma, a tumour around her optical nerve which meant it could never be operated on due to its size and location.

However, after chemotherapy, the growth vanished, making Liberty the first person on record to beat such a tumour.

However, her plight has left her with a range of disabilities which often result in her wetting herself.

After being ordered by the teacher to clean up her urine in front of her classmates, Liberty Rose was then made to stand facing the wall in her wet clothes.

Councillor Farrington, who also represents Woodville and Swadlincote on Derbyshire County Council, said: “People who have contacted me have said that what has happened is disgusting and they are angry.

“They really want to see something done about the teacher.

“I know the county council is dealing with it.”

The incident, at Church Gresley Infant and Nursery School, in York Road, happened in December and an investigation was conducted after Liberty’s parents, Carl and Dawn Finn, contacted the school.

However, it was last month when the couple received a letter informing them that the incident had been ‘fully investigated’ and that the school has ‘taken appropriate action’.

The school said ‘the member of staff concerned deeply regrets what has happened and the matter has been dealt with’.

However, the family, of Station Street, Castle Gresley, have been kept in the dark about what measures had been taken to prevent a recurrence of the incident, and hit back over the way the matter was handled.

Mr Finn said: “We have been told the governors have looked into the matter and they reassure us that our child’s welfare is of paramount importance and that appropriate action has been taken.

“However, they have not told us what the action was.” Councillor Farrington said: “The parents want to know what steps were taken and I think that is their right.

“They should know what is happening.

“You wouldn’t do that to any child of that age or any age.

“It is an education problem and the school and board of governors must deal with it. If it had been made clear what action was taken, then the family would have been put at ease.”

Councillor Longden said: “The authority has spoken with the parents and is working with the school.

“The school has apologised to the parents and has put in place appropriate action so this won’t happen again.

“We want Liberty to get back to enjoying being at school.”

However, Councillor Longden declined to elaborate on what ‘appropriate action’ had been taken.
